Black Jaguar in NH
posted by Big Black Cat in NH wnewman2@cox.net on April 8, 2008
I am 52 years old now but when I was younger, probably around 1968/1969 I visited my uncle in NH. I was with my father, and uncle returning from a fishing trip on Island Pond, near Washington NH. My uncle's house was in Goshen, NH. We were almost back to my uncle's house and shortly after turning off of the main highway between Washington and Goshen onto a county road we came around a curve and a large black that looked to me more like a black jaguar than a cougar or mountain lion walked into the road about 100 to 200 feet in front of the car. It stopped in the road in front of us and looked our way. From what I rememebr its eyes were red in the car lights. It took off into the woods. I was in the back seat hanging over the back of front seat between my uncle and father. We all three looked at each other like we had seen a ghost and I rememnber shouting "did you see that"! We were all three totally taken back by this sighting. My uncle had lived in this area all his life and never saw anything like it and neither had my father. My uncle later said he thought it was a fisher, but I can tell you what I saw was not a fisher and at the age I was then I knew what most every kind of cat looked like since I was fascinated with wildlife, especially big cats and had many books and pictures of all kinds of big cats. It was not a bob cat, not a mountain lion, cougar, panther or anything else I could image in the USA. This looked like a black jaguar or a small black leopard. I have never forgotten this and I find it interesting that others have seen similar big catsin other mountainous areas. I would be interested to know if others have ever seen a similar cat in NH or other New England state.
