My first sighting was just after PM in September of 1996.
I had just gotten off work and was heading home from the Mid Way Travel Plaza part of the PA Turn Pike. I had taken a side road which we call a short cut heading into the Bedford area the back way. I had just crossed a bridge that crosses over the PA Turn Pike, when this Large Cat, a Mountain Lion which was fawn in coloring crossed in front of me. It had the long tail which told me that it was not a deer. It did not move like a deer and was closer to the ground than a deer would stand. This was not a dog or a house cat.
Our second sighting was at our home in Schellsburg in the Shaffer Mountain area. My Partner was sleeping in bed, she had worked night shift the night before. She was a woken by our dogs barking out the patio door window,off the bedroom around noon. She called me up to see the Mountain Lion. By the time I had gotten there it had gone back up the into the mountain. She said it was chasing our outside cats down over the hill, when the dogs scared it off. We had five large dogs in our house at that time. She said it was fawn color also.
My third sighting was of a Black Cat. My partner and I were out delivering papers on my paper route. We had just made the turn off of route #30 E, onto the covered bridge road just before the light in Schellsburg near the Shawnee State Park.The park is less then two miles from where we seen this cat. When a large black cat crossed the road in front of us into a corn field. It looked like a Mountain Lion or a Panther. We figured it was chasing deer that morning. The time would have been around 6:00 AM - 6:30 AM. Again this was not a dog. It moved as a cat would move.
After seeing the Black Cat we stopped at Shawnee State Park to talk to a Ranger. We told him of our sightings and he laughed saying there are no large cats in PA. I told him if the food is here, they are here. They know of no state line boundaries.
These sightings all took place in the late August early September time frame. With in a week of each other.
