Dark Grey Cougar in Suburban NJ
posted by thomas cox tomandjoancox@comcast.net on November 22, 2007
On November 11th, 2007 my wife and I saw a large "black" cat which actually was a dark, slate grey in Suburban New Jersey where we live. This animal definitely had a feline profile and was much larger than a domestic, house cat. It really was in a diffent size category being about 4-5 feet long from tip of nose to tip of (long)tail. We could judge its size well because it ran across an abandoned railroad track in full, bright daylight about 100 yards in front of us. We walked the 100 yards to where it had crossed the tracks and it was crouched behind a large cedar tree. It was about 30 feet from us and stared at us for about a second, then jumped up and ran away before jumping into a weeded area. These railroad tracks run through a small patch of woods and there are other small patches of woods in our town but how could a predator of that size even get to our town? There have been no further sightings although I reported it to the local Police Dept. They told me that the NJ Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife was going to search for tracks but we've not heard anything further. We looked for paw prints but the railroad bed is full of gravel and the woods it jumped into is solid reeds and weeds so we didn't see any prints near the RR trakcs.
