Jaguarundi - Central Texas
posted by jrs_39 jrs_39@hotmail.com on January 5, 2007
Last week I was with a friend on our ranch in southern Coleman County, Texas which is on the Colorado river just below the dam at Lake O.H. Ivie. We were driving in our open ATV (Kawasaki Mule) around noon on a cloudy day. A cat crossed the road about 30 yards in front of us and stopped briefly to look at us. It was about the size of a large bobcat but was much longer and thinner with a very long curved tail. It was very dark colored and had short legs. Its head was squarish but it was clearly a cat. After looking at pictures on the internet, I am 1000% sure it was a jaguarundi. The picture I attached is a stock photo, but if I had a camera, it would be a picture of exactly the cat I saw. It couldn't be anything else. Scientist claim that they only rarely exist in Texas in two counties on the Mexico border, which is about 400 miles south of this location. But they are wrong. I have moved two game cams and a bobcat trap near the location where I saw the cat. Hopefully, i will get a picture soon.
