Southern Indiana Black Panther and 2 Offspring
posted by M. A. Ray dmray@blueriver.net on January 2, 2007
One sunny Sunday afternoon my father took my mother and I out for a ride through the country side. When we rounded a corner on the lightly traveled country road we saw three huge black cat like
animals the big one was about 4 - 5 feet long. I wasn't sure what they were but appeared to be cat like because of the long tails. It was quite a long distance away near the back side of a pasture field with a woods behind it.

They were jet black and stuck out like a sore thumb against the green pasture field. The adult cat was so long you could see a definate swag in its back and its tail appeared to be almost as long as its body....it slowly lead its two cubs across the field following at her heels. They seemed to be about two foot long and 18" high. We watched them for several minutes until they entered the woods.

After that we ask a couple different people that lived in that area if they had ever seen the large black cats. Two others had seen them before as well.

I wasn't sure what they were until I visited a zoo a few years
later and realized that what I had seen that day appeared to me to be black panthers. The original sighting was about 1988. Since then I have heard of several other sightings of the large black cats
in Orange County.

If you wish to discuss this sighting, please go to the Sightings talk topic in the forum.
