red spider
posted by Debbie Fisher fisherbee1@earthlink.net on December 13, 2006
I don't think this is a crypto sighting, but it was strange, and I would love to know if anyone can ID this spider. I saw the thing in the woods at Camp Bullis, outside of San Antonio, in the early 80's. It was large, 2 inches or so across, and in general the shape of a widow-type spider. The spider was on a web stretched across some tree branches (I almost ran into it face first!! - not fun), and was a very bright, solid red color. I did not see any markings, though I have to admit I didn't look all that closely, being very un-fond of large spiders. Any experts in this area know the species?
