LARGE brown heron/emu in N IL/S WI

i first saw them two days ago by a lake in my neighborhood. They look like a mix between herons and emus. When I saw them their where two, I saw the same two today. They are at least 4 and a half feet. My friend then told me how she saw a similar thing in Wisconsin at her cabin. She thought they might be young heron, but the size is huge. She also said they looked like emu.(when she told me this, I had not told her what I had seen yet)
