Lizzie

Lizzie is the legendary lake monster said to inhabit Loch Lochy, which lies 10 miles south-west of Loch Ness along the Great Glen in Scotland. The loch is almost 10 miles long & has an average width of 2/3 of a mile. The river Lochy drains out the south-western end & the Caledonian Canal links its north-western end to Loch Oich which is in turn linked, by the Canal, to Loch Ness above it.

Sightings of Lizzie pre-date the 1933 Spicer & Gray sightings of Nessie. In 1929, two ghillies followed what they first took to be a log for over a mile until it dived below the waters. In 1960, Maurice Burton claimed to have been sent a photo showing a dark mass in the middle of the loch which disappeared as soon as the photo was taken.

In July of that year, tourist Eric Robinson & his family reported seeing an animal 30-40 feet in overall length, dark on top with a lighter underside, a sighting allegedly also witnessed by nine others from their viewpoint at Glen Fintaig.

In 1975, a Fort William woman & her husband reported seeing a large black shape moving then diving on the loch near the Corriegour Hotel, & in 1996 staff and guests of the Letterfinlay Lodge Hotel saw a large shape swimming opposite the hotel. In 1997, local ghillie Alastair Stevenson said a 15-20 foot animal took his rod & gear while he fished by the side of the loch.

The Official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club undertook the first hunt in July 1997. On the first day, sonar detected an 18 - 20 foot object 160 feet down near to Letterfinlay Lodge hotel - it was then detected again at 200 feet, two minutes later. The contact was then lost. This encounter took place in the middle of the loch above a trench where the depth of the loch falls to over 300 feet.

To date, no corroborative evidence to supplement eyewitness testimony & the 1997 sonar readings has been produced.
