Under the falls of the Umgeni River in the Kazulu-Natal province of South Africa, a creature is sometimes seen by startled onlookers. Descriptions suggest the creature is 7-8 meters (21-24 feet) long, has red eyes, and appears to resemble a pleisiosaur. It is said to have skin like a crocodile and a "haunting quality". It is believed to live in the caverns under the water falls. "Howie," as the creature is nicknamed, has been seen numerous times by eyewitnesses. Evidence includes the usual fuzzy photographs and, more noteworthy, three large eggs. Experts claim the eggs are actually those of a crocodile, but the reptile is not native to the area. The creature is also found in Zulu legend where it is repected and revered...but also feared by the Zulu people. Petroglyphs with images of a serpentine creature dating back 2000 years have been found in the Drakensburg Mountain caves. Skeptics suggest Howie is nothing more than misidentified eels, which have been reported to be 2 meters (6 feet) long. - entry provided by Raham Ang, renamon124@yahoo.com
