Gigliolis Whale |
|
Giglioli's whale is a cryptid whale. If it exists, scientists would put it under the family Balaenopteridae, the rorquals (a group of large baleen whales.) It was first described by Enrico Hillyer Giglioli in 1870. He spotted the whale off the coast of Chile while aboard the ship Magenta. He gave the whale the scientific name Amphiptera pacifica. How did Giglioni realize he was seeing a new whale species? Giglioni's whale has 2 dorsal fins. Unfortunately, we cannot affirm that this whale exists due to the fact that no specimens have ever appeared. Since its first sighting in 1870, however, Amphiptera pacifica has also been seen off Scotland and in the Mediterranean. - entry provided by Tanner S., tds4991@cs.com
