Big Manta

It just goes to show how easily some things can be mistaken for others. Any briny sea-dog could mistake this huge manta caught in the 30's-40's off the US coast for some sort of enormous monster. That's one mighty manta!

Name says it all dont it?

Comment by: Wyldehyena on Sep 11, 2008
Oi, it's not fake. It really did happen and they have the real article on it if you just take some time to go to google, nyah! Anyways, they DID catch this giant manta and while trying to capture it, the manta gave birth to a little one and they killed that as well...how nice of them...there's more pictures on google of the manta and her baby, too

Comment by: Paleobiologist on May 25, 2007
big fish

Comment by: godisaprocrastinator on May 16, 2007
Whether it's real or not is beside the point you can't compare it to a thunderbird. You would be able to see a big freakin bird, but a giant manta ray would be hard to see, do you know how big the sea is?

Comment by: Miniraptor-X on May 10, 2007
that killed giant steve irwin

Comment by: Crypticlover on May 05, 2007
THAT IS A VERY BIG MANTA RAY. hUMANS ARE EVIL YO KILL IT.

Comment by: -- Olive -- on Mar 28, 2007
Thats one HUGE Manta Ray O.O

Comment by: creature_138 on Mar 22, 2007
The Manta Ray is a perfect example of a "Monster", before it's discovered and becomes an animal. The irony of what they wont believe, until science classifies it, and reword's everything.

Comment by: Jimiboy on Feb 25, 2007
fake or not they get that big

Comment by: AngelHunter on Feb 08, 2007

Comment by: MEG2th on Dec 15, 2006

Comment by: ZERO_NIGHTMARE on Dec 10, 2006
even if its fake, mantas still get bigger

Comment by: cryptidfan on Nov 30, 2006
Other than the fact that it was horrible that they killed it, I think it...no...scratch that. I KNOW that it is real. I am a huge fan of sharks and rays besides cryptids and many other animals and this is is genuine.

Comment by: TheDude0716 on Nov 12, 2006
I would have to say it's real.

Comment by: JoysDivision on Nov 06, 2006
Anyone else notice the odd similarity between this photo and the famous missing Thunderbird photo? For a moment, I thought it was a photoshop job because of that, but Mantas do get to be huge. Maybe it was the sepia tone that threw me.

Comment by: cryptidfan on Oct 31, 2006
Harumph! They killed a Manta Ray...probably one of the most incredible miracles of nature. "Wow! I can't wait until it rots in the museum, Mommy!" Cretins.

Comment by: AbeLincoln_ROCKZ_ on Oct 09, 2006
Manta rays can get that big, but it's rare.

Comment by: Muglio on Aug 12, 2006
real.

Comment by: Jester-cap on Aug 02, 2006
hey that ones big but i think that they normaly get around that size any how but i dont know

Comment by: Con-Rit on Jun 28, 2006
Actually, you are right about the comparison. It is about 18 feet wide, it just looks huge. I did some more research and I found that the biggest ones can be 30 feet. I love them, though.

Comment by: MongooseDog on Jun 26, 2006
Even if it looks a little fake in the backround, the size is perfectly accetable, they get even bigger then that.

Comment by: SnowStrike on Jun 18, 2006
Everyone is saying "Oh they get big but not that big." But if you do a comparison of the size of the people and the manta ray it has a wingspan of only about 18ft. Given that the average person in that picture is 6 feet tall. So in comparison this isn't even a bigger ray.

Comment by: paleojosh on Jun 07, 2006
mantas dont grow that big so thats no manta if the photo is real than its probably an older species of ray

Comment by: Brendan88 on May 25, 2006
Manta rays are bloody awesome. They can have a wingspan of over 7 meters 21 feet I have seen two while out fishing off Sydney. Both were around 9 foot accross and were playing around and ended up rubbing up against the boat.
miss-demeaner have you actually seen a stingray? They are circular and dont have 'tusks'. Eagle rays have a similar shape but no tusks. You really need to do your homework before making assumptions.

Comment by: brewer on May 05, 2006
100 real. manta rays are mad and i have seen one in australian waters but it wasnt quite that big

Comment by: miss-demeaner on May 01, 2006
it is a sting ray

Comment by: dragon_draconis on Apr 24, 2006
its normal for australia.but you should see some of the fish and sharks we get up here!

Comment by: Con-Rit on Apr 22, 2006
Mantas can get up to an 18 foot finspan, but I don't think they can get THAT big.

Comment by: crypted_newby on Apr 16, 2006
mana rays do get that big there was this story once where this guy was fishing at night and his net caught on a huge mana ray and he was pulled around untill he eventualy got the rope cut on sopme barnical.

Chaos_Mistake i can't tell you how much i agree with you

Comment by: Chaos_Mistake on Mar 13, 2006
What pisses me off so much is that most of the things that we now have to search for could have been right infront of us if it wasnt for the ignorant hunters and fisherman who decided to kill as many as they could

Comment by: eviltwin2 on Mar 13, 2006
get the fish fryer ready!

Comment by: Grossenschwaum on Mar 12, 2006
Anyone who says this is a fake, the picture was taken on a BOAT! boats tend to sway while they're in the water. That explains the ocean. How the hell would a manta that big ever get around the shallows? It's being held up by a crane, and the people are right in front of it. I know this picture is real. If it wasn't it would've been debunked by now. I saw the same picture in a highschool biology book, in a section about how different members of the same species can sometimes show markedly different chracteristics.

Comment by: MrsTackett on Mar 11, 2006
This is a real photo, if i am not mistaken, that was reprinted in National Geographic in the 1980's. I believe the largest on record is 9.5 meters and weighed in at 1,400 kg!

Comment by: Cryptid Catcher on Mar 10, 2006
Yeah, I agree w cryptobrat and cryptopscho. Humans just have to kill anything unusual, which comes back to the question of if we should kill cryptids to prove their existence. Personally I say no because what if that cryptid was the last of it's kind?!? Oh, sorry. Kinda getting off topic here.

Comment by: Cryptophsyco on Mar 04, 2006
they do get big, whos to say not that big, i feel bad 4 it, it must a lived a long time, and then 2 just die..,

Comment by: Hoax-Catcher on Feb 26, 2006
Thats a true photo they can grow more than 28ft long isnt that cool!

Comment by: Another Random Kid on Feb 25, 2006
If you look closer, you can clearly see that the people are right in front of the manta, the man standing center right, part of the manta's body passes BEHIND his shoulder. this one is only a little bigger than average size here

Comment by: catgal124 on Feb 24, 2006
OMG!!!! 50 men must have died trying to catch that thing!

Comment by: B-man on Feb 22, 2006
yeah the background looks fake but the ray actualy looks pretty real to me,and its BUG

Comment by: Sordes on Feb 14, 2006
I dont think this is a faked picture, mantas can really get very large, although this specimen was a very big one.

Comment by: senor on Feb 04, 2006
fake look more carefully!!
you can't tell if people are behind or in front look at the corner if that's the ocean then it's a little bit to high no water spills it's a fake!!
