I have a question. For me the site is semi-hard to navigate and find things on at times. I was wondering, is there a place where there is a codified, spelled out list of behavior that is specifically not allowed and that will not be tolerated? If there is not, might I respectfully suggest that the powers that be get together and develop a standing rule set spelling out in plain and simple english what is and is not allowable. Once that is done, make it easily and readibly accessible by the readers of CZ. This could go a long way in preventing such debacles as the recent KK and Stu situation. This is just a suggestion. But by spelling things out nobody can realistically say oh I didn't know that might be going too far. |

Consider this alternative position.
By spelling things out, people tend to gravitate towards the edge of good behavior instead of striving towards good behavior. |

Well thats true as well. You even have people that specialize in walking right up to the very edge of disaster without quite going over the line attempting to get others to walk over the edge while maintaining their technical innocence as it were. |

Very good observation South, do you want a gold star by your name today. This behavior always reminds me of a bully caught in the middle of stealing some poor kids lunch money and when the teacher walks by he puts his arm around him and acts like they are buddies. |

Naw I gave up gold stars for Lent or something, I have been an active participating member in one of the oldest text based, telnet based BBSes that exists since 1991. I have seen all of this behavior many many times over by countless numbers of individuals. If anyone is interested in a relic of the early days of the internet ISCABBS is still going if not strong then at least steadily.

Well I guess there isn't a list anywhere of acceptable behavior. Just a vague threat that an admin may ban you if you piss him off.
For the next version of the site, it'll be more organized. |

I missed the latest drama, but have been the target of such behavior time and time again. Some serious rules for behavior are sorely needed, and should be put into place as soon as possible, IMO. Nasty comments, slanderous remarks, and the like do nothing but make the site look terrible, and make people visit far less often. I stopped coming in here as much, mainly due to the trolling of certain members (mostly ONE member). Courtesy should be the rule for all, and bad behavior should not be excused because someone is more popular with some members. Equal standards. Bad behavior should also not be tolerated based on political opinions, either. This used to be a decent site, and I would love to see it become one again. Won't happen without your actions, though. |

I get so sick of people whining with the "this used to be such a good site" nonsense. I've been here longer than a couple people, at most, who are still active. The only ones I can think of are Ben and Cisco, maybe Ella. Basilisk isn't really active and he was here only about a month before me anyway. We have just as good members here now as we have ever had. On average, membership might be better because there are currently no lunatics posting. I know you don't like Stu, but he contributes more things of on-topic interest than any person I can remember. The fact that him and I get along well might skew that statement for you, but there has not been a member who consistently contributes such a wide variety of high-quality posts as he does. I am not saying that to defend him, but as a statement of fact.
The site, for the most part, should reflect what would be taking place if we all were in a big room together (and had our hands tied to our chairs). There would be both good and bad. If you want Utopia, play The Sims. Even including the latest Stu vs. Keith Survivor Series cage match, this is the calmest I remember this place. Historically, there was always at least two big wars in Hominids, one in Sea Monsters, then you had Cryptids on the Wing, etc. There was always a war going on in at least one spot. Bigfootmagnet, EB, Carter Farm, Dr. Farhenbach, BFRO, Patterson Film, San Francisco Sea Serpents, Jan Sundberg, on and on and on. We really have none of that any longer. Enjoy it, because it might not last. |

I wasn't speaking of only one person with that statement. There is a LOT of bickering, from many directions, and some set rules for behavior would help cut down on that sort of thing. I have had people that visited the site mention to me that they didn't like it, because of the arguing.
I also agree, and have said so before, that Stu contributes a LOT of good material. I recommend his posts fairly often, in fact. What I don't like is anyone, no matter what side of an argument they take, being excused for attacking people (and no, he isn't the only one that's happened with). Simple rules for behavior, enforced, would solve these issues. There could even be a "hot topics" area, with rules eased up, to allow more heated debate.
"Hands tied to our chairs"...LOL! No doubt a great idea if we all did get together. Otherwise, I could see several brawls happening in minutes. I actually enjoy good debate, when it stays on topic, and doesn't devolve into personal attacks. And I will defend anyone (including Stu - did that before) who is unjustly attacked. Just my nature.
What I want to see is a site that draws people in, and represents the best of the field. This is one of the best places to look for good information on cryptozoology, hands down. Our goal as members should be to show people that we are thoughtful, mature, intelligent people, not people looking for an argument. The number of kids on site should be another reason for better behavior as well. |

Yep Tony, I totally agree with that (being one of the OLD members here LOL almost 8 years for me now).
I was telling the chat guys recently I miss the old days. I really do. And it was a bit more pleasant reading back then. It has NOTHING to do with rules or Mods and EVRYTHING to do with what was posted and by who! I also said when we had "flame wars" they were usually ALOT worse than they are now, lasted longer, and some of the grudges still exist today.
You hafta learn to take the good with the bad. If it gets to be too much, take a holiday like us "oldtimers" do. In general, the site will be the same when you get back. |

I have a terrible disability in being able to hold a grudge, even when I want to. I just can't do it well at all. Yet, there's still people from the "Old Days" I'd like to tear apart. |

I do talk to you. You should know I have defended you in the past as well. You should also know (though maybe you don't) that I do enjoy many of your posts, and recommend them pretty regularly. What I would like to see from this latest mess (that thankfully I missed most of!) is everyone, on BOTH sides, trying a little harder not to step on each others toes. You and I agree on some things, and have had some good discussions. We have also had some disagreements. Nothing wrong with that, if we can try and not insult each other. Avoiding the discussion of some issues with one another is possibly the only way to avoid that. I can tell you are probably as stubborn as I am on some things, and not likely to change your opinions. Not a bad trait. Just means we will butt heads as often as not.
As for what it used to be like here, I have been in the site a long time, far longer than I actually created an account and started posting. As far back as 1998, I was reading on the site, almost nightly. It's changed a bit.
In any case, believe me when I say that you are not an "enemy" in my eyes, more someone I don't always agree with, but can respect in many ways. |
