Hometown Tales did a theme show on MDW and I've got just one thing to say to those who say it's "impossible".....
Velvet Worm. |

My point in mentioning the velvet worm is that, well, the velvet worm is predatory, spits venom, has "pseudo-legs". Then there's that worm that lives in volcanic ash which I can't remember the name of and that worm that you can actually hear under the ground beneath you...
Strange things are out there, even under the ground. It may be a cobra, it may be an actual type of worm. But there are "worms" out there that can do everything the Death Worm is said to be able to do. |

"except shoot lightning"
Electric Eel. Yes, I know they live in water and they're not worms, but they do wield electricity as a weapon.
"acid spitting worm"
the Velvet Worm can. Well, it's chemically far more similar to the glue the Ancient Romans used to make their armor (which is more WTF IMO) but they can still shoot it as far as 30 cm. Especially cool because they are tiny, in at 0.5 to 20 cm.
And becides, some cobras can spit their venom. |

i knew about the cobra which is why i thought they would be the best answer but i didn't know that a velvet worm can spit chemicals that far |

Nature's amazing.
Also, for the record, I'm not saying the Death Worm is exactly what people say it is. I'm just saying that everything they say it can do is possible. |

In my opinion, producing conductive electricity in an aquatic environment is nowhere near the same thing as shooting lightning. Hell, I can generate electricity, too, if I walk across a carpet on a cool, dry morning. And my spit is a corrosive chemical, primarily used to start the digestive process of food digestion. Acidic maybe, but not acid. |

We also have to keep in mind that the telephone game may be at work. It could very well be a sort of under ground spitting cobra thats been exaggerated. |

Except that Velvet Worms are only found in moist tropical environments, environments not really found in Mongolia. |

Back in my Intro to Electomagnetism class I recall we did an exercise where we calculated the arc from a 10,000 volt power line and it ended up being around 10 - 12 feet. So anything shooting lightning from its rectum would have to possess incredible electrical potential to make it even a few feet through the air with appreciable current for an effective shock. If it sprayed a conducting fluid to reduce the dielectric properties of several feet of air the potential could be much less but would still have to be substantial to arc over that distance.

Why does "Mongolian Death Worm" sound like the name of a Grunge Rockband? (Skritches head, then heads for the mosh pit) ;-) |
