Thanks McHaggis - that is fascinating. You most certainly seen something out of the ordinary. One question - was there any chance it was a cluster of many small jellies grouped together or are you certain it was one large continuous body?
This is puzzling as the largest jellyfish I can find on record is Cyanea capillata (Lions Mane) and it seems to only frequent the upper reaches of the North Alantic. My source had it listed with a record bell diameter of 7-1/2 feet and tentacles stretching 120 feet. I can find nothing in that area that would even come close to that size. Anyone know any candidates?
One more tidbit: Dr. Karl Shuker who has written many books on Cryptozoology makes reference in his book From Flying Toads to Snakes With Wings of a case documented by James Sweeney in his book Sea Monsters. He tells of a 1,483 ton vessel called the Kuranda while navigating through turbulent waves heading to the Fijian Islands from Australia having a huge (estimated at 20 tons???) jellyfish being washed aboard. One seaman who was stung by the tentacles later died from his injuries and it took assistance from a deep sea salvage tug (Hercules) called in by Kuranda's SOS to high pressure hose it off the ship. The tentacles were estimated at being 200 foot long and according to the ship's captain the deck was awash in a two foot deep mass of tentacular slime. This supposedly happened in January 1973. And here's the rub - following the Kuranda's arrival back in Sydney samples of the jellyfish were analyzed and tentatively identified as . . . . . . . Lion's Mane.
Being in landlocked Nebraska, USA I find this account a little suspect without a little researching to make sure all the names and dates ring true. I do think it's entirely feasible that jellyfish can grow 30 foot in diameter . . . . . . after all McHaggis seen one with his own eyes. |

Just wanted to mention that I really enjoy these stories, I have no such experiences with sea life, other than seeing seals play simple melodies on horns (only califorina seals are known to do this). |

We have seals in the loch here, which are more than happy to jump out of the water and steal your fish as you are reeling them in while fishing from the pier.
Its quite a contest to see if you can reel the mackeral in before you have to play tug of war with the b**?!s, and end up with just a fish head on the end of your line..lol
Oh and regarding the jelly fish it was a single animal, but unlike the lion mane jellyfish, it was a light pink colour all over. I think it was this light colour that made me think it was probably dead, and maybe bleached by the sun. |

What a great sighting! And wonderful stories!
My dad was in the Marines...he says he never saw anything but dolfins...I think he never paid much attention.
If you look you will see...sounds cheezy but I belive it.
