I'm sorry about your father. I do think that it is possible for some mythological animals to be based off of real animals, with the stories becoming exaggerated and distorted over hundreds of years of re-telling. I'm not too sure that it could go back thousands of years though, but I'm not saying it's impossible. One example could be the Elasmotherium, a sort of rhino that appears to be responsible for unicorn tales. Neandertals are a possibility for ogre and woodwose reports, but I doubt they're involved with giant tales (5'6" average). I also think that it is more likely for dragon tales to be based off of large reptiles like crocodiles rather than surviving dinosaurs.

The theory makes a lot of sense to me about the Neadertals. Because Neandertals where rather large and broad chested.

Neanderthals were not large, in fact they were smaller than our stone-age ancestors, which had a larger average size than modern Europeans. And there are many folks which have stories about man-eating giants, but most of them lived where never any Neanderthal lived, for example Japan. And how do you think this should work? Oh I have such a strange feeling, thereīs a funny image in my brain of a man-eating giant, oh letīs write a tale about it....

Have you been reading by any chance the same article I just finished reading: "On the fossil rhinoceros Elasmotherium" from the magazine Cranium (june 2005)?

I can recall a passage in the Bible (forget where) which mentioned a group sent out to scout an area and returned with tales of "Almas" or "Giant Men" who lived in the area. Sure, its a possibility.
