It's a nice photo and all and I'd be proud of it if I'd have taken it, but it's pretty low quality, overall. Actually, if I'd have taken it, I'd be pissed because it's such a near-miss. The lack of skill of the photographer really drags it down from the lofty potential that was there for this shot, which is what usually snags me up. It looks like someone held a flashlight while it snapped. Really poor planning and equipment if the intention was, as it seems, to capture a high quality picture. Compared to any number of Michael Durham's photos, this one really doesn't stand up in any fashion. I've seen dozens and dozens of Durham's photos which blow this one totally out of the water. I cannot believe this would be considered the best animal photo in 2009. I don't know if it's a regional photo contest or what. There were a couple finer animal photos on exhibit at my local county fair this last summer. If I remember correctly, Keith has taken photos of animals at least close to this good, if not better. But I bet the fact that the Iberian wolf is such a rare animal helped its case.
