Subject: Sullivan, Orange Counties of NY, Sussex and Northern Passaic of NJ

Brad,

I know your study only covered NY State, but creatures know no boundaries. (BADGES! WE NO NEED NO STINKIN BADGES!)

So here's some interesting Demographic stuff. All based of the 2006 census

The southern NYS counties:

Sullivan is one of the least populated counties of NYS. With a population density 79.98 per square mile

Orange population density 461.07 per square mile

Rockland population density 1693.06 per square mile

The NJ Counties of Sussex and Northern Passaic

Sussex pop density 554.33 per square mile

Northern Passaic (West Milford, Upper Greenwood Lake, Ringwood) pop density 208 square mile.

I can tell you from being a resident of this area (I live in West Milford) that those statistics don't tell the whole story. Due to political movements of the 80's and 90's (most notably the "Open Spaces" and the "Highlands Act") the population of West Milford is acutally dropping, as more open areas are being turned into WMA (wildlife management areas).

People in Sussex, Northern Passaic, Sullivan, and Orange are very conservative politically and socially speaking. When I was working for Strauss doing the BF story lines people were only willing to talk if I changed their identities for fear.

Several Trappers (believe it or not! trappers in NJ!) who work Sussex, Passaic, and Sullivan who I talked to have found footprints and laydowns consistent with BF sightings.

Most folks just don't want to talk about it.

I agree. And on the top of that the sightings in the more populated counties of Orange and Rockland are in areas where human population is at its lowest per square mile. There is a lot of wilderness in that area, more than most would think, and not coincidentally the sightigs take place in the Hudson highlands.

True, people from other parts of the country often don't realize that New Jersey has a lot of densely forested areas.

Got an interesting story I'd like to relate. My wife is a seventh grade teacher, and each year in June she volunteers to accompany the seventh grade class on their annual camping trip to Stokes State Forest, which is in Sussex County (northwestern NJ). Well, last year, at about 3AM, one of the female students in her cabin had a severe asthma attack. Her parents, however, failed to alert any of the teachers of her condition beforehand, and didn't bother to pack her inhaler. So, at 3:OO AM, my wife ran out of the cabin and out in the dark courtyard-area to proceed to the first aid/nurse's station for help.

As she ran across the campground's courtyard, she heard what she described as an absolutely bloodcurdling series of yowls and screams that came from the woods. She has never, she told me, heard anything like those sounds and they terrified her. When the police arrived to accompany the ambulance that was sent for the girl (she pulled through) my wife asked him if he had heard those sounds. At that point, most of the camp was awake because of the commotion and had heard them as well. The police officer had responded, very seriously, that "there have been quite a few reports of bigfoot in the area in recent weeks". Freaked her out, to say the least.

After my wife arrived home and told me this, I found a website that had sound files of alleged sasquatch calls and screeches. Several of them that I played to her sounded, she told me, exactly like what she had heard.

I found this interesting because the cop rather nonchalantly said that there have been quite a few bigfoot/saquatch sightings. It makes one wonder as to how many of these sightings there are that aren't reported and how often they take place. I certainly hadn't read anything about sasquatch sightings in west Jersey in any of the papers, or heard anything about it on the local news. Not surprising though, as these things are generally not taken seriously by the media.

My wife is going to Stokes again with her seventh grade class in a couple of weeks. I told her to bring my home a bigfoot.

Thanks for the anecdote, John. Very interesting.
