Hmmm.....

I don't have the book, so can't see page 97. Kinda wish you hadn't decided it was a chupacabra. It's more likely to be a known animal (most sightings are). It's just that it is unknown to you and/or is in a strange state of coat or ambulation.

So, you indicate spines and a striped skin. Your sighting was in the night time, right? So shadows come into play based on porch lights, the moon, flashlights, etc. Perhaps it was one or the other? Perhaps the striping effect was only shadows cast by something else, like chickenwire?

I used to be a farm kid. Chickens tend to smell sulfuric, but it gets "forgiven" or ignored because it can't be avoided. Maybe your recognizing the sulfuric smell was due to heightened senses while alarmed at the unusual occurrence.

A cat will stand on it's legs and fight, and will leap a fence and scream.

I don't mind the idea of a demon, but don't care to divulge my reasons. I do suspect the animal that you sighted is real, and not demonic though. Mostly because I figure demons are more keen on messing with people than chickens.

Did it leave tracks? Might you hunt it or bait it?

Welcome to the site! Lots of folks here have seen lots of unusual things. We try to shave with Occam's razor though.
