Not really a new species, but interesting. Mostly in the northeast. One annoying thing about the article is whether they are grey wolves or red wolves. The red wolves have been known to breed with coyotes for years. That has caused problems when reintroducing the red wolves. The article states they are big enough to bring down deer. I wonder of they are big enough to bring down pigs. We have a pig explosion going on in this country. Maybe this animal can help control them. I would prefer they be pure bred red wolves. Not many left.

I was kind of thinking the red wolf was a southern species. Maybe they're moving northward, like the chupacabras (kidding, Stu and whoever).

i don't know about this one. seems like they're making a lot of assumptions in the article that don't hold water. for instance, the ideas they throw out about coyotes being attacked by dogs and wolves instead of mating? seems like lately coyotes are the bi-curious creature of the animal kingdom. pretty soon we'll see one mate with a bear and have ourselves a new dogman video.
as for your question about red wolves v. grey, timber, etc. if they were bred w/ wolves from the great lakes region then its probably not red wolves.

The red wolf once ranged all the way up to southern Ohio. The algonquin(?) wolves in Canada were long thought to be grey wolves. DNA proved they are a red wolf variant. The red wolves are generally smaller and move in smaller packs then the grey wolves. Easier for a red wolf to mate with a coyote. The article does state it is happening in the northeast. I agree with loreweaver, makes one think of grey wolves. Be nice to see more information. To just say wolves is rather misleading. Down in the Dallas area, the coyotes have changed. not sure if introduction of dogs or what, they are larger, have a flatter face adn are far more aggressive. Perhaps the same thing happened.

This is very old news. These animals began showing up in the upper midwest in the 1960's and then spread east through Ontario and down into New England. They called them "coydogs" at first, assuming they were coyote-dog crosses. DNA studies later proved they were wolf/coyote crosses. They are intermediate in size between a wolf and coyote.

They are simply referred to as the Eastern Coyote now, to differentiate them from the smaller Western Coyote. A coyote is simply a small sub-species of wolf so they're not a hybrid, just a cross between two closely related sub-species.

A coyote is a smaller sub-species of wolf?

I thought Coyotes were Canis latrans, and gray wolves Canis lupus?

Closely related species, sure. But Coyotes and Wolves exist in sympatry all the time, and stay distinct.

I guess I should have said closely related species.

The two stay separate when populations are healthy, but when numbers are down either animal will mate with just about anything canid. Both wolves and coyotes have been known to mate with domestic dogs and with each other.

The "Eastern Coyote" cross filled an empty niche from which both species has been largely extirpated. They couldn't have spread into the midwest and northeast if both wolves and coyotes hadn't been removed. Nature adapts and this is proof.

The mixed heritage of these animals has been documented for many years now, and I don't understand why they don't simply name them as a new subspecies. They're well established and they're here to stay.

I got this far into the article.
"This is an evolutionary mechanism to generate new variation that can work faster than genetic mutation," added Kays, curator of mammals at the New York State Museum."

I stopped there because everyone knows that Jesus created these creatures.

I have seen them up in packs chasing a deer and they are bigger than grey wolves. They should help with the pig issue because pigs are starting to come here in North Carolina and they are really a nuisance. Then again at times so are the red wolves.

Not likely...

yeah... and i don't think red wolves are considered a problem anywhere. there's still only about 5o of them in the swamps on the coast in a wildlife reserve. if they're bothering you, you're probably somewhere you're not supposed to be.
