But he said that WW3 probably would have resulted. He stood up against his advisors, who demanded the demonstrations be crushed, and that, he says, "cost me very dear". But, he says, the "West" developed a "triumphalist complex" over the fall of the wall, which led it to over-extend itself in foreign affairs. He never intended for the USSR to break up into 15 little pieces, or for eastern Europe to leave the Soviet orbit. All those things were unintended consequences of his policies.
