RMM,
The guy is definitely talented. There was careful planning to his guitar selection- he got steel strings, probably mids, on a well-made acoustic guitar that had good resonance. He's very good at the harmonics- the tone you get when you hit a string and your finger slightly remains touching the string and produces two tones. If you know your six-string well enough, you can match the tones to be an octave apart to get your matched harmonics. I only wished he deviated from the 2-3 chords/pentatonic scales that he was strumming, plucking, and tweaking.

WOW. The most impressive part was when one did the strumming, and the other was on the fretboard. What can I say, they make beautiful music together. I really hate clichés, but I had to use it.....

Irish, check out the link above I gave to Clemente. One of my favorites. If only I could see him perform live. |

That dude's got talent too, Bill. What runs through my head is the endless practice that I can see all of these musicians going through to reach the final product. That and the multi-talent aspect. I know many people that can pick up a guitar and play it well. I know fewer that can sing while playing. The guy that you linked has a few tricks up his sleeve: he's got rhythym and slaps, and can go over and under the fretboard. Notice that all of the links though in this thread, nobody sings in any of them.
I have yet to see anyone challenge the almighty Hendrix. That's a package deal for you.

Impressive, Bill. The main difference I see between Jimi and Mato is relaxation. Jimi had a certain grace and flow to him that's hard to duplicate. To orchestrate the guitar talent Jimi had with his natural voice, soul, and timing was out of the ordinary. It's like he had some kind of natural symbiosis with his guitar that fell into place like a DNA structure or something. If you play his songs on the guitar, it becomes clearer how he was gifted- it's kind of hard to explain without writing a novel.

A sign of my madness - I cherish Hendrix as a singer...
YouTube - Jimi Hendrix Wind cries Mary
I also note with joy how low and tough the fills and solos are. In the 70's & 80's I got very tired of everyone flashing scales and screaming up the neck.
I stole the quote from a friend 30 years ago. 'My two favorite guitarists are Mick Ralphs and David Gilmour, because neither can play fast.'
I'd expand the list some, but agree with this: A solo should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. |
