I had a book once, unfortunately not in my possession anymore, which made a plea that Columbus knew very well there was land in the west. Either he thought it was Cathay (China) or another place, I can't recall. Besides the already mentioned argument that people already knew the earth is round for a long time, the book stated that Columbus could have heard the stories of Vikings sailing for the Americas and having a colony on Greenland. Also it mentioned that English fisherman set to the north-west to catch cod, on which is probably the Great Banks. They could have spotted land if they sailed a bit further. Finally there was an intriguing story, that spanish sailors found, years before Columbus set sail to the west, a canoo with some people aboard. Based on their description they could have been native americans from the West Indies. |

Doesn't that go the wrong way? I mean, I thought all the ocean currents near Spain flowed westwards. |
