My grandfather, who happened to be a WWII pilot, referred to gremlins any time something mechanical malfunctioned. Specifically if there was no identifiable reason for the malfunction. In fencing, working with the electronic foils/sabres/epees and all the boxes and wires that go along with an electronic strip we talk about having a ghost in the blade any time we'd have a light go off or some other mishap due to faulty wiring.

I think the word 'gremlin' may have been used in folklore by some anglo-saxon or germanic group for their version of an elf/fairy/goblin etc.

As far as I know 'Gremlin' is a portmanteau word derived from 'Goblin' (as in the mythical beastie) and "Fremlin's", a brewery in Kent near which many fighter squadrons were based.

Don't get 'em wet,
Don't expose them to sunlight
