By that definition, it sounds like a "gremlin" was a creature to take the fall for a mishap in the aircraft community, probably jokingly. By your definition, it appears that mechanics/technicians shifted the blame to a community-generated entity that took some of the heat off of them in a transparent way. Maybe like blaming Cupid for a dose of puppy-love or something.
It's probably fun to think of things like that "gremlin" in the movie "Twilight Zone, The Movie," but it is just something that was made up for a lack of a scapegoat.
