What do you all think on gremlins( the creature, not the movie.? heres a little info :
Gremlin is an English folkloric creature, commonly depicted as mischievous and mechanically oriented, with a specific interest in aircraft. Although their origin is found in myths among airmen, claiming that the gremlins were responsible for sabotaging aircraft, John W. Hazen states that "some people" derive the name from the Old English word gremian, "to vex".[1] Since World War II, different fantastical creatures have been referred to as gremlins, bearing varying degrees of resemblance to the originals. |

nickanap,
By that definition, it sounds like a "gremlin" was a creature to take the fall for a mishap in the aircraft community, probably jokingly. By your definition, it appears that mechanics/technicians shifted the blame to a community-generated entity that took some of the heat off of them in a transparent way. Maybe like blaming Cupid for a dose of puppy-love or something.
It's probably fun to think of things like that "gremlin" in the movie "Twilight Zone, The Movie," but it is just something that was made up for a lack of a scapegoat.

My grandfather, who happened to be a WWII pilot, referred to gremlins any time something mechanical malfunctioned. Specifically if there was no identifiable reason for the malfunction. In fencing, working with the electronic foils/sabres/epees and all the boxes and wires that go along with an electronic strip we talk about having a ghost in the blade any time we'd have a light go off or some other mishap due to faulty wiring.
I think the word 'gremlin' may have been used in folklore by some anglo-saxon or germanic group for their version of an elf/fairy/goblin etc. |

As far as I know 'Gremlin' is a portmanteau word derived from 'Goblin' (as in the mythical beastie) and "Fremlin's", a brewery in Kent near which many fighter squadrons were based. |

Scratch that last part in that post. That's what i get for thinking.
Word History: Elves, goblins, and trolls seem to be timeless creations of the distant past, but gremlins were born in the 20th century. In fact, gremlin is first recorded only in the 1920s, as a Royal Air Force term for a low-ranking officer or enlisted man saddled with oppressive assignments. Said to have been invented by members of the Royal Naval Air Service in World War I, gremlin is used in works written in the 1940s for "an imaginary gnomelike creature who causes difficulties in aircraft." The word seems likely to have been influenced by goblin, but accounts of its origin are various and none are certain. One source calls in Fremlin beer bottles to explain the word; another, the Irish Gaelic word gruaimín, "ill-humored little fellow." Whatever the word's origin, it is certain that gremlins have taken on a life of their own. |

We bikers are a suspicious bunch ourselves. There are a lot of us that have what are called “Gremlin bells” on our bikes.
The story goes that the gremlins get sucked into the bell housing inside and then when you ride the bell jingles and drives them insane. Thus forcing them to leave and attach themselves to some other poor unfortunate soul. Though they will not work that well if you buy one for yourself. It has to be a present from a friend or someone you love to work at its fullest potential.
Below is a picture of the bell on my bike. They do come in all shapes and sizes, and are available through biker catalogs. Though you should have a loved one purchase it for you at your local Harley dealer, or whichever type of bike you rides dealership.

It could be a real animal. Since it's interested in aircraft is understandable. To me it reminds me of a Cat who loves Yarn, a Dog who loves to chew on shoes, balls, chewythings, Parrots who love mirrors, swings, bells. If this is a real animal, it's similar to these animals with a interest in something. It's interested in Machines/Aircraft..etc.
Do you know the description of appearance.? Reptile, Ape, Monkey Kind? It also could be unknown kind of animal that has no specie record, family record, relation record..etc. |
