With coyotes, and most wild critters, an aggressive defense is usually best. Predators rarely risk injury to themselves, as this may lower their hunting fitness. If you defend your dog with a stick, or rake, or whatever, he'll be fine-and I'd love to see a video of that:)! We had an old tom Siamese mix that was attacked once by a coyote-poor coyote made to serious miscalculations. First, he picked the wrong cat to F*** with, and more importantly, he chose to do it in view of my wife-that animal must have thought the gates of hell had opened and let her out-you could smell his urine for days!! (Sometimes she scares me, too;))

thanks. as far as coyotes go, i always thought i had the presence to scare one off, if need be (with a broom or stick or whatnot). -and props to your wife for the same as your cat's 'backup'! :) all-and-all this young woman's death was a weird and sad and very rare event..... so i hope it doesn't reflect on general coyote behavior these days.

and just a thought about that lady's death- is it even common for wild coyotes to hunt in pairs at this time of year? within earshot of of other human hikers? i thought not. it's such a weird, odd story. so sad for that hiking young woman......
