I am following this blog of an Ivory Billed Woodpecker searcher for a while. While he was posting very interesting updates every day, he just got clips of what he believes is an IBW. Moreover, the last blog entry of 11.05.2009 reads "Got that sucker!"
I wonder what's next. Does he have a good picture/video that everybody can believe in?

this is strange, between my last posting and now, the blog entry was changed to "To be continued..."

hmmmm, "to be continued" sounds rather ambiguous.

You should read 'The Grail Bird',a great book written by a guy who has had a legitimate sighting of one.It is a good peice of insight if you havn't read it already.

The author's name is Tim Gallagher, and he's a journalist affiliated with Cornell University. It's a very involving travelogue and you get a real taste of what it is like to go on a hardcore search for elusive birds like this one.
Be warned: It also paints a very sobering picture of the rapid decline of a signature species and biome at the hands of the reckless human species. Even though the end is on a brighter tone, you are left with a definite feeling that the story isn't fully told, nor is the work done yet.

So, what happened to Cornell's activity in Arkansas?

Well, I answered my own question. It appears that searching has been suspended, at least in Arkansas.

Anyway, I found this PDF link showing a list of potential other habitats where much more conclusive evidence has been found about the continued existence of Ivorybills.

(sorry about the failed link: The link feature is putting up a fight right now, so it's down to the ol' cut and paste)

you are right, the Arkansas search has been suspended. Another search which is going on is in Florida:
Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in the Florida Panhandle
Unfortunately there are no recent updates.
For me Mikes blog is the most interesting, because he is out in the Pearl every day and gives almost daily updates.

It seems alsmost more likely that if the IBW is still alive,it's relict populations would nbbe in Cuba, but there are no recent credible sitings there that I've ever heard of.

The last sightings on Cuba were supposed to be in 1986. The following reference is often quoted for this statement:
Reese, K.M. (1986). Ivory-billed woodpeckers sighted in eastern Cuba. Chemical & Engineering News 64 (20), 76.
I do not have access to this paper and I also do not find it online anywhere, but I am trying to get a copy of that article through our library.
