I was reading a thread about raccoons without tails. I am in a suburb N of Atlanta, GA. We have a family of raccoons with tails that many of the families have seen. Last night, I thought I had two gray cats on the porch until they turned around. I thought they were raccoons, but they have a pointed snout. As one writer posted, these do not have the mask bands of raccoons either. Then I though it was our possum that roams around. The body was fluffy and shaped like a koala, not the body of the possums at all. And, it had a stub tail exactly as described on here. I grew up in IL near lots of farm ground. This is not a mutilation. It wiggles like that of a bear. Within a few minutes it was joined by another. Same snout, same tail. They are gray/blackish and large, about 20 pounds. Twice the size of our male cat. I looked around animal sites today. The face was the face of a coati from South America, but they all have tails, too. I am going to try and get pictures. A most interesting goul for our Halloween tomorrow night! If anyone can shed any further light, we would be most interested. In the meantime, I will keep watching. |

I think the tree wolf is related to the timber tiger. |

It's just a cute nickname for a chipmunk, same as tree wolf for a squirrel. |

this makes me curious: plump, gray, "tailless" & mask-less "coons"? who are not possums or cats or squirrels?
please add any additional details to your sighting, thanks.
are you sure that they couldn't be an unpublicized color-morph of bobcats? or a weird wild-breeding pop of short tailed house cats? interesting. |

It's a groundhog. They get up into the 20-30 pound range and are common over most of the US.
I don't know if this is what the poster saw or not. It fits the description, but they haven't confirmed this as the animal. |

Surely no one would mistake a groundhog for any kind of raccoon or coati? Groundhogs have a pretty noticeable tail too. |

The description says it has a stubby tail. It looks like our poster is a hit-and-run, so we'll probably never know. |

"no one" is a broad call. just browse youtube and you'll see all kinds of normal bugs and critters noted by the poster as "this weird [monster/f-cking] thing!!!!" -and from the candid audio it's plain most are totally serious.
never dismiss the general publics' lack of knowledge of "common" critters"..... (and plants. and where vegetables come from. but that's another tale...). |

Also called "woodchuck", and common in the Atlanta area. It's a major garden pest because of the burrows it makes and the enormous quantities of vegetables it eats. |

A woodchuck, would chuck, as much wood, as a woodchuck, could chuck, If a woodchuck could chuck wood. But unfortunately, woodchucks do not chuck wood. |
