i dug this site up a while back, to freak out a resident of Indiana already wary of natural bodies of water (the idea of having swum where monsters have been sighted before didn't sit well with her, heheh)... oddly theres no mention of Lake Pepin in the appropriate section... "Peppie" somehow escaped my years of intense dracontology study (no don't underline dracontology, its a valid field of science dedicated to lake and sea cryptids (well ok it was hijacked from the field of science researching dragons, but w/e)... dang spellcheck (it underlines spellcheck too, sheesh...))...
anyways, the site in question: The Online Lake Cryptid Directory
i wonder what Bessie, Pressie, Ponik, Naitaka, Manipogo, Igopogo, Cressie, Memphre and all the rest of em are up to these days... |

Manipogos are kinda cute eh... |

I've never heard of Peppie either, until now.
Ness, Kanas, now Pepin - they're all at it. |

It's only 7 Hours from me. Stu Your Plane ticket is in the mail, this is going to be great. You bring the crisps and lager. I'll bring the HD Handy Cam, the bait, and the underwater Microphone. |

Here's the page for us seafarin' mercenaries, yarrrrrrrrrrr!
I'll bring some pelicans, just in case there's a no-show.
One thing - the Wikipedia entry for Lake Pepin states "It has a surface area of about 40 square miles (100 km˛) and an average depth of 18 feet (5.5 m)." Where are the 80-foot depths mentioned in the news reports?.
The guy lost the photo. Of course.
It sounds to me like a poor attempt at trying to rustle up a few tourists, Kanas-style, to come looking for the "monster", to sell a few dish-towels & mugs, to the Monster Quest tweenie zomg!!!! generation.
Plain or salt & vinegar crisps, Budvar or Lowenbrau?
As a by-the-way (I'm off work today), I trawled & came up with some other references...
God bless the Wood family. 'Two short planks' immediately sprang to mind.
Lake Pepin Monster Contest Form. $100? $100? Take it to the lake!
From the Mississippi Valley Partners Membership Meeting, February 2, 2008, at the National Eagle Center Wabasha, MN (I kid you not).....
Peppie Monster Promotion: Larry Nielson presented a new idea for area promotion. After seeing a PBS film on Lake Champlain about “Champ” their lake monster, he investigated information about any such sightings on Lake Pepin and found the MNHS Almanac of 4-28-1871 noted a first sighting of a Lake Pepin monster. Larry has created a web site www.peppie.net and with the backing of the LCTB is offering a reward of 10,000 for anyone that can document a Lake Pepin sighting of Peppie with a specific photograph and dna testing at the Uof M. He is looking for comments and ideas from the MVP membership about this idea.
$10,000? $10,000? I'm not even packing the lager for $10,000!
(Don't go looking for www.peppie.net. It's a dead link to an advertising page.) |

Make sure they swim in tight formation for the out of focus shots. See if you can round up a little synchronized dive sequence too.
I've already got some t-shirts and coffee mugs ready to print on. |
