Looking at pictures of the onza (the famous one and others) I see that, if it's a cougar, the tail is out of proportion and short. It reminds me of the giant cougar in the gallery, which also has a short tail. Has anyone else noticed this? |

Hey Panthera, off the present subject but I was wondering if I could make a slide of your Ozark Howler for a talk I'll be doing near St.Louis in late February? If I could please send me the name you wish credit be given.
Thanks, Jerry |

Hi Panthera
Which Onza pictures are you looking at, could you offer some links to them?
Thanks Bill |

Normal Cougar
Giant Cougar
Onza
I don't know if it's the original, but I actually found what might be the only color picture of an onza! Note that the big cat's tail and the onza's tail are proportianately shorter than the normal one's. |

You can't see the end of the Onza's Tail in the photograph, therefore how can you measure its length?
A few more points:
The Onza is severely malnourished.
The Normal Cougar is a fat captive cat.
The Giant Cougar has had a considerable amount of doubt cast upon it.
Cheers ;) Bill |

*You mean the big cat is a hoax?*
Many questions were raised about the 'One Big Cat' scenario! But those who were involved weren't very forthcoming with answers, that's all I can say :)
But anyway, where's the photo that shows all of the Onza's tail?

Yes, I noticed this! It was one of the things I pointed out when I did an onza research report in middle school. Normal mountain lions have a longer tail like a leopard, but the onza has a shorter tail like a jaguar. You know some people believed that the onza was a jaguar-mountain lion hybrid, maybe this was the reason.
I still don't think it's anything more than a mutant, though. |

As I said before, I can't see the end of the tail in the picture!
If we are only seeing 3/4 of the tail in the 'linked Onza photo' (which is not unreasonable) then the tail would be a perfectly reasonable length for that of a puma i.e. 50% of the nose to tail base length.
If anyone has a photo of the entire Onza, then I'd love to see it, as I don't think I've ever seen the missing tail end.

Sorry about that. The full picture is in the glossary. Only the very tip of the tail is cut off, so it still looks out of proportion. Also, I thought that analysis showed no malnourishment. |

Thanks for that Panthera, but the photo in the Glossary reveals another 25% of the tail, which brings the full length to at least 50% of the nose to tail base length (a third of entirety) . This is a perfectly acceptible 'body to tail proportion' for a Cougar!
