What could it be? ask bemused bystanders & befuddled press representatives? Is it a sea serpent? Is it a basking shark? Is it a tiger-squid hybrid? Are those really exposed collagen fibres?

Holy Rotting Carcasses Crypto-Man!

I would have said that the beast was a piece of whale blubber, but it was noted as having paws and a tail. I am not quit sure what the creature could be, but I am sure there is a logical explanation (I did not here anything about a skeletal structure, which may have lowered my choices as to what it may be).

You are correct, those are the throat pleats of a large baleen whale.....

That's what I think too - it looks like the underside of a humpback whale - the flippers at the sides seem to have knobs on like humpback fins, and the grooves look like throat grooves.

I wonder if anyone collected tissue samples for DNA identification.

All of the beached carcass "mystery" creatures could easily be identified if people would simply take a tissue sample for testing.

Yep, that's what it is. For DNA, read Does Not Apply.

The ever-knowledgable Loren Coleman calls this a Mystery Giant Turtle on his blog. Well, he at least did edit it and say "or is it a decomposing whale" after it was pointed out to be a humpback. Why do people constantly think that these ambiguous lumps of flesh always have to be something new?

These two humpacks (cow & calf) are currently in the Sacramento in Ca., let's hope they don't end up as tuna burgers too.
