There are some creatures similar to mothman sighted through the world, and the curious fact about them, is that they usually bring disasters. Here's a list: Mothman: Sighted in west Virginia, is linked to Silver Bridge collapse. Freiburg Shrieker: Sighted in Germany, 1978, it was a huge black winged creature, was blocking the entrance of coal mine, when the miners tried to enter in the mine, the creature screamed and the miners fled, some minutes after a explosion happened in the mine. Man-dragon: Sighted in China in 1926, it was huge and black, was seen few days before Xiaon Te Dam collapse. Black bird of Chernobyl: Was seen next to Chernobyl power plant, Ukraine,it was a huge black headless man with big wings. It's final appearance was April 26th, the day of the meltdown, it was seen flying through the smokes from the explosion. Crimean War monster: On day March 15 in some year of the war, the soldiers made a truce, during the night 5 russian soldiers prepared an ambush when they saw a giant headless crow in the sky, soon after the aparition a bloody battle begun, only one of the 5 intruders survived. Owlman: Sighted in Cornwall, England, seen by many women, it didn't bring any disaster. |

Thanks, very interesting, researching these stories will be fun. Harbringers and omens, maybe more examples can be found.
Here's hoping I never see a giant headless crow in the Sky! |

Not surpriseing. It seems the Russian word for Wormwood is Chernobyl, and a wormwood disaster is mentioned in the Book of Revelations in the Bible. |

I like to believe that the mothman and his family belong in the paranornal realm along with Angels and Demons as they seem to be some kind of messengers and as stated earlier appear on occasions of impending doom! |

Lots of people have said that 40, but it's just an urban legend. Propagated by an authors mistranslation and spread via the internet. Chernobyl isn't even a Russian word. It comes from a Ukraine dialect and it's closest meaning is derived from the mugwort plant, literally "black grass", common to the swamps in and around there. Though related in genus, mugwort and wormwood are separate species, as are sagebrush and tarragon.

I don't know why, but the mothman reminds me of Harpies from Greek lore. I guess it's because their both bird-like creatures. |

theres something about the mothman that just creeps me out. whenever i read about it i get nervous. nothing else really does that to me. I guess that makes it even more intriguing to me....or it just might be the fact that, for some reason, whenever i read about it its always late at night. Time now: 2:45 AM. |

LOL! Same here, spitfire. This is a rare exception but somehow I often read the creepiest stuff right before bed time which for me is around 1am where it's very dark and everyone else is asleep. Mothman freaks me out and I'm sure I would have a huge nervous problem if I ever saw one...or worse. The fact that sightings of them always seem to happen before a great tragedy doesn't make me feel any better either. I have this book called Unexplained Mysteries of the 20th Century. My favorite chapter is Winged People and other Non-Humans but I then lay awake shivering all night. |

When I learnt about the flesh eating kangaroo of the limestone coast I could hardly sleep, kept thinking it would sudenly burst through the window and eat me, lol. Though if mothman made an appearance around here I wouldn't sleep at all. |

Yep, been there before too, just not with the kangaroo. Now I can't watch any movie with aliens without whimpering. If I saw ET again I'm sure I would have serious problems. |

I just need to tell you all my personal opinions about the Mothman. I don't believe the Mothman was connected with the Silver Bridge Disaster at all. I think that the Mothman was just drawing our attention away from the Men In Black. If you don't know who the MIB were(besides the ones in that one comedy), Wikipedia that. So anyways, the Mothman should not be one to be afraid of. There is not one report of it even attempting to harm someone. If you're fear just comes from that one movie, "The Mothman Prophecies", then you really need to do some more research on this type of stuff. I consider myself a true Mothman paranoid/fanatic. |
