Subject: Eltanin Antenna (Sponge or Not?)
From: K. Kitsune Fox posted Wed, Aug 25 2004, 1:11pm
I found an artical on this subject at Fortean Times' Website, and decided to break it down to just the most important facts and see what I could work out for my own desicion as an Armchair Crytozoologist. Here are my facts and my "findings" (they're inconclusive right now)

Facts:
(From http://www.forteantimes.com/articles/183_eltanin1.shtml)

#1: USNS Eltanin (the ship) really existed.

#2: The scientists on the ship were interviewed, and found to have not tampered with the picture.

#3: Confers with a point found by Bruce Cathie, who did the research concerning numerology and UFOlogy.

#4: In 2003 one of the Eltanin scientists, AF Amos, was revisited. He referred the e-list researcher, Tom DeMary, to the book Face of the Deep by Bruce Heezen and Charles Hollister. The book said the following: “While the bath sponges are limited to the warmest shallow waters of the continental shelf, a few of their bizarre relatives are rather commonly found in the deep sea. Cladorhiza, a particularly dramatic one which somewhat resembles a space-age microwave antenna, was not uncommon in the early dredge hauls of Challenger and Blake…” and “they are sponges with a long stem ending in ramifying roots, sunk deeply into the mud. The stem has nodes with four to six club-like appendages. They evidently cover like bushes extensive tracts of the bottom.”

Conclusion:

Until such time as I manage to find a photograph of the Cladorhiza sponge, I refuse to cast judgment on the topic. I also will not further investigate the Bruce Cathie angle (which I find to be much less viable an option). Should the Cladorhiza sponge be found to be a non-viable answer, then the Bruce Cathie correspondences will have to be researched further.

So, if anyone has a picture of the sponge that I could compair to the Eltanin Antenna photo (which I'll submitt to the Gallery), I'd greatly appreciate it.

Excellent. Thanks for the link.
Seeing the original artical is good for my research...

A link from that site that you gave even had a link to a picture...

NowI've got to put some time into getting a scale indicatore for the Antenna picture... because those spounges are pretty small... I'll have to put some research into the maxiumu size and the like...

The magazine published a two-parter that pretty much cleared it up in my mind.

Untill I get some sort of indication of the Antenna's scale, I refuse to bow to a magazine artical.

Which magazine was it?

I think the article said it was two feet tall.

Hello all: If you want to see the original article, I recommend this page:

http://www.larryhatch.net/ELTANIN.html

The Eltanin Antenna was exposed as Cladorhiza Concrescens for the first time on that page of mine.
Numerous copycats have since copied it in whole or in part.
I recommend the original above for full text and images.
If someone can make sure the link is clickable, I would much appreciate it.

Thanks - Larry HatchOriginal Eltanin Antenna article.
